Reading Coach

The Physical Education department at John Young Elementary has two primary goals.  The first is to develop the individual skills and coordination of each and every student.  The second is to teach cooperation and good sportsmanship to everyone.  The strengths of the Physical Education department lie within the relationship of the PE instructors, Mrs. Smith, Mr. Cohen and Ms. Geenen.  The teachers have a harmonious working relationship.  This relationship is conducive to new ideas and creativity.

The Library Media Center is a partner with the learning community at the school.  Our joint focus is to develop lifelong learners through books and reading.  School-wide and grade level activities will be provided to foster the excitement and joy received when children and books come together.  We are happy to announce that the Media Center collection has undergone a core weeding process so students will have access to up-to-date information.

Art is the oldest of all recorded human expression and has always had an important and valuable influence in our lives.  The Art program at John Young provides the students with opportunities to explore and investigate art production, history, and aesthetics.  Mrs. Murphy-Kemp uses her knowledge and experience in fine art to make learning fun and creative.

Music classes include experiences with singing, playing instruments, moving, listening, and creating.  The musical concepts that are studied include rhythm, melody, harmony, form, expression and style.  Children will experience traditional American folk songs in addition to a variety of world music.  Lessons will lead toward note reading and music literacy.
